Sexuality is a part of life that many people enjoy, yet people with disabilities often experience barriers to fully participate in intimate and sexual relationships and all of the aspects of life that come with those relationships, such as having children. The historical belief that people with disabilities are asexual is embedded in today’s practices and policies. How can social workers adapt their practice and change policies to meet the needs of people with disabilities to live the intimate and sexual lives that they desire?

Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda, and Lela Rankin Williams, experts in disability, intimacy, and sexual health, interviewed 42 social workers who supported people with various disabilities throughout the life span in three different Southwestern, Southern, and West coast states. In addition, eight young adults with various disabilities were interviewed. This results of this study were summarized in the book Disability, Intimacy, and Sexual Health: A Social Work Perspective

This webinar will provide brief summaries of the history of disability and sexual citizenship and highlight pertinent themes from the interviews: health sexuality in childhood and sex education and romantic relationships, intimacy, and sexuality followed by an overview of the implications for social work practice.

The On-Demand (Self-study) version will be online within ten days.
