Healthcare disparities and inequities are prevalent globally and in the United states is a causal factor for reduced health outcomes and increased mortality among minority elder adults. Ageism intersection with race and gender is growing problem as our nation’s baby boomers get older. Currently, not a lot of attention on ageism and intersecting populations and needs to be addressed through research, practitioner level and public policy. Current research supports that minority elder adults experience healthcare disparities causing increased chronic medical decline and increased mortality than non-minority elder adults. This webinar will provide research based information on the prevalence, types of disparities, and chronic medical conditions most common for different race and ethnic elder groups as well as provide recommendations at the client, community, and societal levels for addressing this important issue that is relevant to all social workers working with aging adults.

Learning Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to describe at least three cultural differences and values that impact an elder adult access and decision to utilize healthcare systems. 
  • Participants will be able to list four systemic health care access issues reported to limit access and utilization for healthcare services. 
  • Participants will be able to apply at least two strategies for reducing health care disparities at individual, community, and larger systems level.
